Looks like it's been awhile since our last update. I've updated the
dependency here and additionally vetted the various dependency upgrades.
I notably did not vet `zstd-sys` since that would require vetting all of
zstd's C implementation itself which I am not, nor do I suspect many of
are, equipped to do. In lieu of that I've updated the exemption of
`zstd-sys` to the newer version.

* Configure Rust lints at the workspace level
This commit adds necessary configuration knobs to have lints configured
at the workspace level in Wasmtime rather than the crate level. This
uses a feature of Cargo first released with 1.74.0 (last week) of the
`[workspace.lints]` table. This should help create a more consistent set
of lints applied across all crates in our workspace in addition to
possibly running select clippy lints on CI as well.
* Move `unused_extern_crates` to the workspace level
This commit configures a `deny` lint level for the
`unused_extern_crates` lint to the workspace level rather than the
previous configuration at the individual crate level.
* Move `trivial_numeric_casts` to workspace level
* Change workspace lint levels to `warn`
CI will ensure that these don't get checked into the codebase and
otherwise provide fewer speed bumps for in-process development.
* Move `unstable_features` lint to workspace level

This commit configures our CI to run `cargo clippy --workspace` for all
merged PRs. Historically this hasn't been all the feasible due to the
amount of configuration required to control the number of warnings on
CI, but with Cargo's new `[lint]` table it's possible to have a
one-liner to silence all lints from Clippy by default. This commit by
default sets the `all` lint in Clippy to `allow` to by-default disable
warnings from Clippy. The goal of this PR is to enable selective access
to Clippy lints for Wasmtime on CI.
* Selectively enable `clippy::cast_sign_loss`
This would have fixed#7558 so try to head off future issues with that
by warning against this situation in a few crates. This lint is still
quite noisy though for Cranelift for example so it's not worthwhile at
this time to enable it for the whole workspace.
* Fix CI error

Wasmtime's CI does not run clippy so there's no enforcement of this
configuration. Additionally the configuration per-crate is not uniformly
applied across all of the Wasmtime workspace and is only on some
historical crates. Because we don't run clippy in CI this commit removes
all of the clippy annotations for allow/warn/deny from the source.
By not activating the `derive` feature on `serde`, the compilation speed
can be improved by a lot. This is because `serde` can then compile in
parallel to `serde_derive`, allowing it to finish compilation possibly
even before `serde_derive`, unblocking all the crates waiting for
`serde` to start compiling much sooner.
As it turns out the main deciding factor for how long the compile time of a
project is, is primarly determined by the depth of dependencies rather
than the width. In other words, a crate's compile times aren't affected
by how many crates it depends on, but rather by the longest chain of
dependencies that it needs to wait on. In many cases `serde` is part of
that long chain, as it is part of a long chain if the `derive` feature
is active:
`proc-macro2` compile build script > `proc-macro2` run build script >
`proc-macro2` > `quote` > `syn` > `serde_derive` > `serde` >
`serde_json` (or any crate that depends on serde)
By decoupling it from `serde_derive`, the chain is shortened and compile
times get much better.

For `wasmtime` I'm seeing a reduction from 24.75s to 22.45s when
compiling in `release` mode. This is because wasmtime through `gimli`
has a dependency on `indexmap` which can only start compiling when
`serde` is finished, which you want to happen as early as possible so
some of wasmtime's dependencies can start compiling.
To measure the full effect, the dependencies can't by themselves
activate the `derive` feature. I've upstreamed a patch for
`fxprof-processed-profile` which was the only dependency that activated
it for `wasmtime` (not yet published to crates.io). `wasmtime-cli` and
co. may need patches for their dependencies to see a similar
improvement.
* Remove deny.toml exception for wasm-coredump-builder
This isn't used any more so no need to continue to list this.
* Update Wasmtime's pretty_env_logger dependency
This removes a `deny.toml` exception for that crate, but `openvino-sys`
still depends on `pretty_env_logger 0.4.0` so a new exception is added
for that.
* Update criterion and clap dependencies
This commit started out by updating the `criterion` dependency to remove
an entry in `deny.toml`, but that ended up transitively requiring a
`clap` dependency upgrade from 3.x to 4.x because `criterion` uses
pieces of clap 4.x. Most of this commit is then dedicated to updating
clap 3.x to 4.x which was relatively simple, mostly renaming attributes
here and there.
* Update gimli-related dependencies
I originally wanted to remove the `indexmap` clause in `deny.toml` but
enough dependencies haven't updated from 1.9 to 2.0 that it wasn't
possible. In the meantime though this updates some various dependencies
to bring them to the latest and a few of them now use `indexmap` 2.0.
* Update deps to remove `windows-sys 0.45.0`
This involved updating tokio/mio and then providing new audits for new
crates. The tokio exemption was updated from its old version to the new
version and tokio remains un-audited.
* Update `syn` to 2.x.x
This required a bit of rewriting for the component-macro related bits
but otherwise was pretty straightforward. The `syn` 1.x.x track is still
present in the wasi-crypto tree at this time.
I've additionally added some trusted audits for my own publications of
`wasm-bindgen`
* Update bitflags to 2.x.x
This updates Wasmtime's dependency on the `bitflags` crate to the 2.x.x
track to keep it up-to-date.
* Update the cap-std family of crates
This bumps them all to the next major version to keep up with updates.
I've additionally added trusted entries for publishes of cap-std crates
from Dan.
There's still lingering references to rustix 0.37.x which will need to
get weeded out over time.

* Leverage Cargo's workspace inheritance feature
This commit is an attempt to reduce the complexity of the Cargo
manifests in this repository with Cargo's workspace-inheritance feature
becoming stable in Rust 1.64.0. This feature allows specifying fields in
the root workspace `Cargo.toml` which are then reused throughout the
workspace. For example this PR shares definitions such as:
* All of the Wasmtime-family of crates now use `version.workspace =
true` to have a single location which defines the version number.
* All crates use `edition.workspace = true` to have one default edition
for the entire workspace.
* Common dependencies are listed in `[workspace.dependencies]` to avoid
typing the same version number in a lot of different places (e.g. the
`wasmparser = "0.89.0"` is now in just one spot.
Currently the workspace-inheritance feature doesn't allow having two
different versions to inherit, so all of the Cranelift-family of crates
still manually specify their version. The inter-crate dependencies,
however, are shared amongst the root workspace.
This feature can be seen as a method of "preprocessing" of sorts for
Cargo manifests. This will help us develop Wasmtime but shouldn't have
any actual impact on the published artifacts -- everything's dependency
lists are still the same.
* Fix wasi-crypto tests
* Update to cap-std 0.26.
This is primarily to pull in bytecodealliance/cap-std#271, the fix for #4936,
compilation on Rust nightly on Windows.
It also updates to rustix 0.35.10, to pull in bytecodealliance/rustix#403,
the fix for bytecodealliance/rustix#402, compilation on newer versions of
the libc crate, which changed a public function from `unsafe` to safe.
Fixes#4936.
* Update the system-interface audit for 0.23.
* Update the libc supply-chain config version.
This commit replaces #4869 and represents the actual version bump that
should have happened had I remembered to bump the in-tree version of
Wasmtime to 1.0.0 prior to the branch-cut date. Alas!
* Remove dependency on `more-asserts`
In my recent adventures to do a bit of gardening on our dependencies I
noticed that there's a new major version for the `more-asserts` crate.
Instead of updating to this though I've opted to instead remove the
dependency since I don't think we heavily lean on this crate and
otherwise one-off prints are probably sufficient to avoid the need for
pulling in a whole crate for this.
* Remove exemption for `more-asserts`
* Update tracing-core to a version which doesn't depend on lazy-static.
* Update crossbeam-utils to a version that doesn't depend on lazy-static.

I believe that Microsoft itself is supporting the development of
`windows-sys` and it's also used by `cap-std` now so this switches
Wasmtime's dependencies on Windows APIs from the `winapi` crate to the
`windows-sys` crate. We still have `winapi` in our dependency graph but
that may get phased out over time.
* Make windows-sys a target-specific dependency
This updates to rustix 0.35.6, and updates wasi-common to use cap-std 0.25 and
windows-sys (instead of winapi).
Changes include:
- Better error code mappings on Windows.
- Fixes undefined references to `utimensat` on Darwin.
- Fixes undefined references to `preadv64` and `pwritev64` on Android.
- Updates to io-lifetimes 0.7, which matches the io_safety API in Rust.
- y2038 bug fixes for 32-bit platforms
Relevant to Wasmtime, this fixes undefined references to `utimensat` and
`futimens` on macOS 10.12 and earlier. See bytecodealliance/rustix#157
for details.
It also contains a fix for s390x which isn't currently needed by Wasmtime
itself, but which is needed to make rustix's own testsuite pass on s390x,
which helps people packaging rustix for use in Wasmtime. See
bytecodealliance/rustix#277 for details.
* Upgrade all crates to the Rust 2021 edition
I've personally started using the new format strings for things like
`panic!("some message {foo}")` or similar and have been upgrading crates
on a case-by-case basis, but I think it probably makes more sense to go
ahead and blanket upgrade everything so 2021 features are always
available.

* Add a two-week delay to Wasmtime's release process
This commit is a proposal to update Wasmtime's release process with a
two-week delay from branching a release until it's actually officially
released. We've had two issues lately that came up which led to this proposal:
* In #3915 it was realized that changes just before the 0.35.0 release
weren't enough for an embedding use case, but the PR didn't meet the
expectations for a full patch release.
* At Fastly we were about to start rolling out a new version of Wasmtime
when over the weekend the fuzz bug #3951 was found. This led to the
desire internally to have a "must have been fuzzed for this long"
period of time for Wasmtime changes which we felt were better
reflected in the release process itself rather than something about
Fastly's own integration with Wasmtime.
This commit updates the automation for releases to unconditionally
create a `release-X.Y.Z` branch on the 5th of every month. The actual
release from this branch is then performed on the 20th of every month,
roughly two weeks later. This should provide a period of time to ensure
that all changes in a release are fuzzed for at least two weeks and
avoid any further surprises. This should also help with any last-minute
changes made just before a release if they need tweaking since
backporting to a not-yet-released branch is much easier.
Overall there are some new properties about Wasmtime with this proposal
as well:
* The `main` branch will always have a section in `RELEASES.md` which is
listed as "Unreleased" for us to fill out.
* The `main` branch will always be a version ahead of the latest
release. For example it will be bump pre-emptively as part of the
release process on the 5th where if `release-2.0.0` was created then
the `main` branch will have 3.0.0 Wasmtime.
* Dates for major versions are automatically updated in the
`RELEASES.md` notes.
The associated documentation for our release process is updated and the
various scripts should all be updated now as well with this commit.

This updates to rustix 0.33.5, which includes bytecodealliance/rustix#258,
which fixes bytecodealliance/rustix#256, a link error on Android.
Fixes#3965.
* Bump the rustix versions in the Cargo.toml files too.
Following up on #3696, use the new is-terminal crate to test for a tty
rather than having platform-specific logic in Wasmtime. The is-terminal
crate has a platform-independent API which takes a handle.
This also updates the tree to cap-std 0.24 etc., to avoid depending on
multiple versions of io-lifetimes at once, as enforced by the cargo deny
check.
* Update to cap-std 0.22.0.
The main change relevant to Wasmtime here is that this includes the
rustix fix for compilation errors on Rust nightly with the `asm!` macro.
* Add itoa to deny.toml.
* Update the doc and fuzz builds to the latest Rust nightly.
* Update to libc 0.2.112 to pick up the `POLLRDHUP` fix.
* Update to cargo-fuzz 0.11, for compatibility with Rust nightly.
This appears to be the fix for rust-fuzz/cargo-fuzz#277.
This pulls in a fix for Android, where Android's seccomp policy on older
versions is to make `openat2` irrecoverably crash the process, so we have
to do a version check up front rather than relying on `ENOSYS` to
determine if `openat2` is supported.
And it pulls in the fix for the link errors when multiple versions of
rsix/rustix are linked in.
And it has updates for two crate renamings: rsix has been renamed to
rustix, and unsafe-io has been renamed to io-extras.
* Use rsix to make system calls in Wasmtime.
`rsix` is a system call wrapper crate that we use in `wasi-common`,
which can provide the following advantages in the rest of Wasmtime:
- It eliminates some `unsafe` blocks in Wasmtime's code. There's
still an `unsafe` block in the library, but this way, the `unsafe`
is factored out and clearly scoped.
- And, it makes error handling more consistent, factoring out code for
checking return values and `io::Error::last_os_error()`, and code that
does `errno::set_errno(0)`.
This doesn't cover *all* system calls; `rsix` doesn't implement
signal-handling APIs, and this doesn't cover calls made through `std` or
crates like `userfaultfd`, `rand`, and `region`.
* Use an mmap-friendly serialization format
This commit reimplements the main serialization format for Wasmtime's
precompiled artifacts. Previously they were generally a binary blob of
`bincode`-encoded metadata prefixed with some versioning information.
The downside of this format, though, is that loading a precompiled
artifact required pushing all information through `bincode`. This is
inefficient when some data, such as trap/address tables, are rarely
accessed.
The new format added in this commit is one which is designed to be
`mmap`-friendly. This means that the relevant parts of the precompiled
artifact are already page-aligned for updating permissions of pieces
here and there. Additionally the artifact is optimized so that if data
is rarely read then we can delay reading it until necessary.
The new artifact format for serialized modules is an ELF file. This is
not a public API guarantee, so it cannot be relied upon. In the meantime
though this is quite useful for exploring precompiled modules with
standard tooling like `objdump`. The ELF file is already constructed as
part of module compilation, and this is the main contents of the
serialized artifact.
THere is some extra information, though, not encoded in each module's
individual ELF file such as type information. This information continues
to be `bincode`-encoded, but it's intended to be much smaller and much
faster to deserialize. This extra information is appended to the end of
the ELF file. This means that the original ELF file is still a valid ELF
file, we just get to have extra bits at the end. More information on the
new format can be found in the module docs of the serialization module
of Wasmtime.
Another refatoring implemented as part of this commit is to deserialize
and store object files directly in `mmap`-backed storage. This avoids
the need to copy bytes after the artifact is loaded into memory for each
compiled module, and in a future commit it opens up the door to avoiding
copying the text section into a `CodeMemory`. For now, though, the main
change is that copies are not necessary when loading from a precompiled
compilation artifact once the artifact is itself in mmap-based memory.
To assist with managing `mmap`-based memory a new `MmapVec` type was
added to `wasmtime_jit` which acts as a form of `Vec<T>` backed by a
`wasmtime_runtime::Mmap`. This type notably supports `drain(..N)` to
slice the buffer into disjoint regions that are all separately owned,
such as having a separately owned window into one artifact for all
object files contained within.
Finally this commit implements a small refactoring in `wasmtime-cache`
to use the standard artifact format for cache entries rather than a
bincode-encoded version. This required some more hooks for
serializing/deserializing but otherwise the crate still performs as
before.
* Review comments
This commit adds LICENSE files to all **published** crates which do
not have it already (most of the crates have it).
Providing the license files is a requiment of the Apache 2.0 License.
